Aluminium, fibreboard, and a plastic shell pressed to look like woven leather.

Most suitcases are sold on the promise that travel will become effortless once the correct piece of polycarbonate has been purchased. Airports expose the limits of that argument quickly.

The better cases make a smaller claim. Most of that claim rests on the shell: what it is made of, and what happens to it after a few years in the care of baggage handlers. A few are also good-looking.

## Rimowa Classic Cabin

Rimowa's aluminium cases have become so recognisable that choosing one is close to putting on a frequent-flyer uniform. The Classic Cabin is that uniform with leather handles.

Its anodised aluminium shell has the familiar ribs, riveted high-gloss corners and leather handles. Rimowa was founded in Cologne in 1898 and introduced the grooves in 1950\. LVMH took a majority stake in 2017.

The cabin measures 55 × 40 × 23cm, holds 36 litres and weighs 4.3kg. It has four wheels, a telescopic handle that stops at any height, TSA locks and a lifetime guarantee. It costs €1,280.

Marc Sadler designed FPM Milano's Bank case around the travelling trunk, an object conceived when luggage was more likely to be carried by someone else.

The Spinner 76 is assembled by hand in Italy from aluminium with leather handles. Two oversized butterfly catches close the case, followed by a pair of TSA padlocks, in case the first two were not enough. Inside are a padded lining, two dividers and four buckled straps.

Despite the name, FPM lists it at 75 × 49 × 28.5cm. It weighs 7.4kg empty, holds 90 litres and costs €1,578.

Seven and a half kilos before packing is a commitment, though a trunk was never meant to go anywhere near an overhead bin.

## Bottega Veneta Odyssey

Bottega Veneta has spent decades letting intrecciato do the work other houses give to a logo. On the Odyssey, the weave is reproduced in thermoformed polycarbonate. A pattern devised to hold strips of leather together now holds nothing together at all. The handles and trim are calfskin.

The cabin divides its 38 litres between a zipped side and a strapped side, with a removable divider. It costs €2,700; the 75-litre check-in costs €3,100.

The house also makes a cabin case in actual woven calfskin. It costs €7,500.

## Globe-Trotter Centenary Carry-On

Globe-Trotter was founded in Saxony in 1897, a year before Rimowa began in Cologne. Its cases are made from vulcanised fibreboard: layers of paper-based material compressed into a rigid shell.

Production later moved to England, where parts of the original manufacturing process remain. In 1912, the company says, an elephant weighing a tonne stood on one of its cases at Hamburg Zoological Gardens.

The Centenary carry-on has vegetable-tanned leather trim, TSA locks, a telescopic handle and four spinner wheels. The 1897 case managed without the handle and the wheels.

This one measures 56 × 42 × 21cm, holds 34 litres and weighs 4.2kg. It fits the overhead bins of most major airlines and costs €2,195.

Fibreboard scuffs, stains and records every journey whether its owner wants it to or not.
