*Everyone talks about the size of a Willy Chavarria trouser. The more useful question is where it begins.*

At the top of a Chavarria trouser, the waistband sits where a waistband used to sit — at the waist.

On the body, that decision reorganises everything below it. The Cholo Chino rises high over the hip, opens into deep pleats and falls into a wide leg: high waist, wide leg, as the label puts it plainly. The legs lengthen, the torso compresses and the chest reads broader. A familiar male silhouette is redrawn by moving the waist a few inches north, which explains more about Chavarria's work than the word *oversized* ever has.

Oversized has become one of fashion's emptiest words, as at home on a stretched sweatshirt as on a sharply engineered shoulder. Chavarria's clothes are often huge, but their size is governed. The trouser doesn't only widen; it begins high, and the jacket usually ends close to where it begins. The broad shoulder is checked by the high waistband. What results is proportion, not bulk.

Most menswear treats the waist as somewhere clothing passes through rather than pauses at — jeans slung from the hip, T-shirts over the waistband, even last decade's wide trousers keeping the loose, low attitude of something suspended below the natural waist. Chavarria draws a hard line through the middle of the body instead, and it changes how a man stands.

Seen from a distance, the eye doesn't move smoothly from shoulder to shoe. It catches at the waist. Above it: chest, collar, shoulder, face. Below it: leg and motion. The body divides almost like a diagram, and it is the discipline at the top that keeps the width below it from taking over.

You can trace that discipline back through the collections. The pleated trousers in 2022 already had this logic; by spring 2023 the same high waist was sitting under exaggerated shirts and jackets with shoulders that ran past the body. The individual garments have changed season to season. The proportion underneath them hasn't.

His men wear vast trousers, cinched waists, pointed collars, jewellery, flowers and considered hair, yet masculinity never becomes an anxious subject along the way.

The body is made imposing first. Decoration arrives after, without needing to apologise for itself.

That is a sharper idea than the vague claim that menswear is becoming “more fluid.” Fluidity is an abstraction. Chavarria offers men an actual shape instead.

Exposure works through the same geometry. A low waist shows skin. A high waist covers it but pulls attention towards what sits beneath the fabric, and Chavarria uses both. Huge trousers sit next to briefs. Broad tailoring sits next to a tank top. The body reads fully covered in one look and almost comically bare in the next. Even the underwear follows the same logic: the label publishes front-rise measurements for its briefs with the same precision it gives its trousers. Everything returns to the same point on the body.

None of this hides its references. The zoot suit, Chicano tailoring, pachucos, 1940s cutting and the wide shapes of later streetwear all sit somewhere in the lineage, openly.

A Cholo Chino doesn't ask the wearer to know any of that history to feel its effect: taller, broader, more composed. The trouser creates its own posture.

The Adidas collaboration works for much the same reason. Swap wool for technical fabric and the silhouette survives. The track pant carries the same volume through the leg, three stripes or not. The shape is the brand before anything else gets added to it.

A waistband changes the character of the person wearing it.

Drop the trousers back to the hip and the chest loses some of its force. The legs shorten. The particular mix of severity and glamour weakens. The clothes might stay large. They would stop being monumental.
