New York changes too quickly for a definitive guide. These are the addresses worth keeping: social rooms, old institutions, newer tables and places with enough character to survive the hype cycle.

Stay & social

Bemelmans Bar / The Carlyle (Upper East Side) — One of the few famous rooms that still deserves its reputation. Go late enough for the piano and Ludwig Bemelmans murals to matter.

Casa Cipriani (Battery Maritime Building) — The Battery Maritime Building turned into a private social world: hotel, club, terrace and harbour light.

Fouquet’s New York (Tribeca) — Parisian codes translated to Tribeca with unusually convincing interiors. More useful as a whole hotel world than as a single restaurant.

Zero Bond (NoHo) — The NoHo members’ club that became a shorthand for private downtown power. The room still matters more than the mythology around it.
