In 1845 a British doctor opened a sanatorium on Capri and called it Quisisana: here one heals. The island has been selling recovery ever since, along with sandals, scent and the view of the Faraglioni. In 1962 a sandal maker on Via Camerelle opened his shop at midnight for Jacqueline Kennedy.

Institutions

Grand Hotel Quisisana (Via Camerelle) — George Sidney Clark's sanatorium of 1845, a hotel since 1861. Oscar Wilde, Maxim Gorky and Feodor Chaliapin stayed, and King Farouk of Egypt spent part of his exile here after 1952.

Punta Tragara (Via Tragara) — A villa of 1920 for the engineer Emilio Errico Vismara, credited to Le Corbusier, above the Faraglioni. The Allies used it during the war, when Eisenhower and Churchill came through; Count Goffredo Manfredi bought it in 1968 and made it a hotel in 1973.
