A good deal of modern Spetses was paid for by one man. Sotirios Anargyros, who went to America and came back rich from tobacco, opened a grand hotel on the harbour in 1914, then founded a boarding school on the model of Eton, which in 1951 hired a young Englishman called John Fowles to teach English. Horse carriages still wait at the Dapia, and the island's heroine was a widowed shipowner who commanded her own fleet.

Poseidonion Grand Hotel (Dapia) — Anargyros's hotel of 1914, modelled on the Carlton in Cannes and the Negresco in Nice. A five-year restoration finished in 2009, and the hotel belongs to the school he helped to found.
