In 1777 Morocco became the first country to recognise the United States, and in 1821 its sultan gave the Americans a building in Tangier, which they still own. The city spent much of the twentieth century as an international zone, and a certain kind of writer came for the rules that did not apply. What survives of that period is mostly small: a bookshop, a café on a cliff, a house the Saint Laurent circle used for summers.
